Civil Service Unravelling.

My last post found a potential solution to reducing NHS waiting lists by using data from Chat GPT and the extensive use of AI.

So a key question is:- Could this approach be used by the whole of Government departments to speed up processes and drammatically improve their long acknowledged reputation for poor productivity?

The first problem is, how do you measure productivity in government, especially when most of the staff are “working” from home. Let’s ask Chat GPT :-

Productivity =Inputs/Outputs

Then it starts to get more complicated by talking about proxies and quality and effectiveness. AND contextualised gains like innovation and digital transformation and reorganisation. Are you still with me? That all sounds like they don’t really want to be measured🤡

So let’s try the KISS method – Keep It Simple Stupid. We will have a look at how we are doing with teaching children maths.

According to the Office of National Statistics 73% of pupils achieved the Key Stage 2 standard. Although I don’t know what that means🤡

Compared to other western countries the UK is 9th in year5; 6th in year9 and 11th at the age of 15. East Asian countries ( Singapore, South Korea, Japan, Taiwan, HongKong) lead in all categories.

Apparently I should be looking at PISA scores. So I am going to ask about the leaning tower, since I have no idea what else PISA stands for.

It is obvious really- Programme for International Student Assessment. Which is about the ability to apply knowledge and skills in a real world context.

I am going to give up on this line of questioning, because Chat GPT keeps translating its answers into Welsh, even though I don’t speak Welsh. Chat GPT evidently has a mind of its own🤡

We used to teach children their tables in primary school.

1×2=2, 2×2 =4, 2×3 =6, etc, etc.

1×3=3, 2×3=6, 3×3= 9 and so on …

Right up to the 16 times table 16 x16= 256😀

I can still do them today 70 years later.

(It had something to do with “avoirdupois” weights and was first used in the 13th century, but I have forgotten that bit)

Today children use calculators for maths and can’t add up in their heads. So a key question is “Do we need maths teachers anymore?”.

Come to that “Do we need any teachers anymore?”. AI can do all the teaching for us.

As the Boomtown Rats sang :-

“We don’t need no education, we don’t need no thought control. Hey teacher! Leave those kids alone.”

That’s one Department less in the civil service🤡 Chat GPT using AI can do it all.

PS :- My musical memory is failing me. The Boomtown Rats just didn’t like Mondays. It was Pink Floyd who had it in for education.

  1. Now then, I am totally confused and mystified why your Dear John Have quoted CHAT GPT, I have read the articles by the website ‘WIKAPEDIA’ on this subject, and again On The same web site The articles on AI-Artificial Intelligence issed by and published by a SAN FRANCISO USA Institution! There is a lot of reading to do!!!!
    The basic concullusion I have from the articles are as follows;
    1 The chatter on web sites is gathered universally and digested by CHAT GPT from The web, and appears to be registered By the US San Franscio learning establishments as AI-Artificial Intelligence,
    2 There is no backing or confirmation, legal of aurthoritively that this AI-ARTIFICIAL INTELLEGENCE is true or correct, and no one, or a body is unable to prersue the truth behind the AI! All reading and research by the reader is done under ones own beiefs and risks. ONe cannot challenge the as PUBLISHED ”AI” and one must use ones intelligence/education and beliefs to seek any truths in the matters being discussed.
    FOOTNOTE
    I therefore decline to comment on Dear JOHN;s article ”Civil SERVICE UNRAVELLING”??
    I wish to see not a load of website gossip, but real Political view points of truth and correctness to help the UK make honest and comendable policies in the future of our nation.
    CHAT GPT and AI are for those who or whom may wish to be entertained, but I fear not educated!!!

  2. Schooling

    Interesting these remarks about AI and alledged education, and learning? Dear John has spluttered a few comments/times tables/comparison of learning years achievements for school children of various age groups nation to nation: All allegedly quoted on AI

    It has mystified me personally? I learnt as an elder brother of 3 sisters that I had to defend my sisters physically out of company of my parents, and ensure they were safe. Morals and ethics with religion were stressed By my parents, and taught at school as one learnt through the years the basic skills of life, Like reading/talking/ conversation and learning in detail how one could converse/discus/ debate various issues that arose, and understand the decisions may be asked to undertake, in one native language [English]. Numeracy was taught so that one could appreciate the intricacies of money earnt, money borrowed, and the hazards of debt, and the responsibility of providing for ones family.

    That was basically taught at home and at school until 11 years old how to look after one self.

    When one went onto education after 11 years old, one learnt in more detail, what was required of one not only by ones parents, but by society, that is the nation UK.

    This modern day and age one has Artificial Intelligence AI, now then my personal interpretation is that before one can utilize or even come to terms with AI one has to have had a very strong upbringing in beliefs of one ones ethic and beliefs are in ones self, and the nation to which one my wish to belong too?

    AI is in my understanding every one else’s beliefs and ideals, co related on a worldwide basis, of different countries and their beliefs and ethics.

    Hence AI is a way of obtaining information, however for a subject belief or decision, one needs and still needs a good educational system based upon the beliefs and ideals of ones society either as a nation or group of nations. Pure belief in AI and its upgrading into an informed social standard is to my mind dangerous, and requires, a good educational system that can question and verify the logic of What IN DETAIL ARTIFICIAL INTELLENCE AI is QUOTING?? BE AWARE Please!!!
