GrumbleSmiles was set up to provide innovative answers to tackling the problems of loneliness in later life. Many older people are less able to get out and about, which can be the first steps towards a life of isolation.
Last year I did a lot of armchair travelling to distant destinations and with the help of other blogging friends, I am about to start my travelling again this year to find and explore new places with their help. We are going cloudsurfing to San Francisco.
This is another blog from my new found friend, Cap Chastain who is a blogger and photographer based in Alaska. His blog is called “Bobba Caps Doxology”. This trip took place way back in 2012. Cap is a remarkable 82 year old and he and his wife travel together around the world.
I’ve been to America many times, but I’ve never been to the West Coast and in particular California. So like most people, I only know it from the movies. Once again my thanks to Cap for allowing us to travel with him. I’m sure by sharing all his photos it will bring back many memories of “Bullitt”, “Escape from Alcatraz”, “Mrs Doubtfire”, “The Rock”, “48 Hrs”, “Malteze Falcon”, “Vertigo” and who can forget “Dirty Harry”.

Memories John i have to travel in my minds eye to the places which have meant home to me at various times during my own lifetime. A summers day catching a bus at rawdon post office, on the “moorfields” service[ horsforth to otley via the chevin!], with a towel and swimming costume under my arm. I would catch the otley bus with my pals and school friends buy a 6d [6~penny-tanner] ticket from the bus conductor, who would withdraw the ticket from his board and then punch it after i had paid the fare.-a while before ticket machines on this ledguards bus service?- we got out at the otley bus station and walked to the open air swimming pool, by the river wharfe.
