CAFE WEALTH survey — CHARITY

This is a continuation of the CAFE Wealth survey.  ( Other posts in this series can be found either by clicking on “CAFE Project” in the Tag Cloud or by clicking on  “GrumbleSmiles Trust” in the Topics list).

Charity giving

This is a great mark of the generosity of older people with 70% of the group frequently giving to charity.  There is research evidence to suggest that people are happier when giving rather than receiving and this doesn’t just apply to charities.

For an interesting video on this subject go to YouTube and enter Michael Norton – “How to buy Happiness” (10 minutes, 59 seconds).

Charity Shopping

It’s surprising how many people from this group do shop in charity shops.  Is this because they are looking for something to do, looking for good value or are they committed to recycling?

CAFE WEALTH survey — BUS PASS

This is a continuation of the CAFE Wealth survey.  ( Other posts in this series can be found either by clicking on “CAFE Project” in the Tag Cloud or by clicking on  “GrumbleSmiles Trust” in the Topics list).

Bus pass

This graph illustrates how important public transport is to older people even in a relatively mobile and affluent group.  The bus pass, which makes travel free within the city, must be a significant marker of an Age Friendly City.  It would be interesting to know how many people would continue to travel if the free service was withdrawn.

The future of subsidies public transport for older people is clearly under threat at a national level and I have written about this in the GrumbleSmiles blog.  You can read my blogs by clicking on “BUS PASS” in the TAG CLOUD.

CAFE WEALTH survey — INTERNET BUYING

This is a continuation of the CAFE Wealth survey.  ( Other posts in this series can be found either by clicking on “CAFE Project” in the Tag Cloud or by clicking on  “GrumbleSmiles Trust” in the Topics list).

Internet buying

This is a rapidly expanding area whose growth will no doubt continue.  About half the group currently buy things on the internet but most of these purchases were restricted to books and holidays.  Relatively few used it to buy bulk items like groceries.  There are significant discounts to be obtained from internet purchases and you have to wonder whether our participants are making the most of this opportunity.

Footnote:  An App that identifies discounts and free services and how to obtain them could be of significant value.

Internet security

Whilst people may be right to be cautious there are nonetheless several ways of enhancing your security in terms of information on the internet and particularly in terms of financial transactions.  Until these are more commonly understood, internet financial transactions may remain a barrier for older people.

Footnote:  This is an area where greater awareness training and advice about sensible precautions would no doubt be a benefit.

Pay pal account

Almost everyone knew was PayPal offered but less than a third made use of the service.  It is a very significant security measure when making any purchases on the internet.

Footnote:  Making it available to people would give them greater comfort about buying things.

CAFE WEALTH survey — eBAY

This is a continuation of the CAFE Wealth survey.  ( Other posts in this series can be found either by clicking on “CAFE Project” in the Tag Cloud or by clicking on  “GrumbleSmiles Trust” in the Topics list).

eBay

I realised as soon as I saw this graph I should have asked “have you every bought anything on eBay?”  However the relevance of the question about selling is that eBay has the potential to help people de-clutter their house and increase their wealth.  Who knows, somebody may have a long forgotten treasure in the attic.

CAFE WEALTH survey — EMPLOYMENT

This is a continuation of the CAFE Wealth survey.  ( Other posts in this series can be found either by clicking on “CAFE Project” in the Tag Cloud or by clicking on  “GrumbleSmiles Trust” in the Topics list)

Employment

Unsurprisingly the majority of our participants were not employed.  This no doubt reflects the fact that many of them have been retired for some considerable time.

Paid Job

Just over a quarter would like to have a job no doubt to supplement their income but also to maintain contact with the world of work.  There is huge skill and considerable potential in this group but it comes at a time of significant austerity and competition for jobs.

Footnote:  There could, nonetheless, be significant opportunity for small jobs to be paid for between the members of the CAFE Community Groups.  This is an area that warrants further examination and might potentially lead to a “odd job APP”.

CAFE WEALTH survey — rating

This is a series of graphs which show the results of our third CAFE group meeting held in the Welcome Centre, adjacent to Coventry University Technology Park, on Friday 21stJune 2013.   The focus of this survey was WEALTH and HORIZONS as perceived by the  “expert” group of older people.   It is representative only of their views of themselves and doesn’t purport to be typical of other groups of older people in Coventry.

The commentary on the graphs is entirely my own personal reflections.    ( Other posts in this series can be found either by clicking on “CAFE Project” in the Tag Cloud or by clicking on  “GrumbleSmiles Trust” in the Topics list)

Wealth rating

The first thing to note when looking at this graph is that the definition of wealth is subjective and not measured simply in financial assets.  In the survey group nobody rated themselves at the lower end of the scale of wealth.  Around 60% assessed themselves as adequately well-off with the remaining 40% even more positive.  That’s a contrast with the commonly held view of impoverished old age which may be a reflection of the group we surveyed.  At the same time the elderly as a whole in the UK hold most of the disposable income in the population.

CAFE HEALTH survey — PILLS AND POTIONS

This is a continuation of the CAFE Health survey.  ( Other posts in this series can be found either by clicking on “CAFE Project” in the Tag Cloud or by clicking on  “GrumbleSmiles Trust” in the Topics list)

pillsIt’s not at all surprising to me that nearly half of our group are taking four or more pills a day.  In the nursing homes I was involved with at ExtraCare Charitable Trust and indeed also in the retirement housing projects, the number of pills a person took was almost seen as a badge of pride.  Bathroom cabinets bulged with boxes of pills, bottles of tablets, pre-packaged blister packs and in the nursing homes the daily medication round was accompanied by a trolley of goodies.  The medication industry is a huge enterprise ably supported by a medical profession that has a pill cure for most things and a pill popping army of patients.

I have been writing about pills almost since my first blog.  You can see the first one by clicking in the Archive on September 2010 and looking at “A pill for everything”.  You can then find all my subsequent “Pill” blogs and many of the cartoons that accompany them by clicking “PILLS” in the TAG CLOUD.

CAFE Belgrade Group

FIFTH MEETING – BELGRADE THEATRE FRIDAY 26th JULY 2013

The fifth meeting of the Garden Project Group met in the Belgrade Theatre on Friday 26th July 2013 and agreed that they will now morph into a new group which we have decided to call The Belgrade Group which will work on taking the project to the next stage.

Since the last meeting, John Archer from the Styvechale Grange Residents’ Association, had begun to make progress on how we might set up a CAFE Group in his area.  He has made contact with a local councillor and between them they would hope to approach the primary school to act as a host for CAFE events.  This is unlikely to be resolved before September but in the meantime John will continue to see what more he can find out about older peoples’ needs in his area.   Frances Fielding had made similar approaches in the Cheylesmore area and identified two possible locations for meetings – The Community Centre and the Baptist Church Hall.  She had also identified that there are approximately 4,000 people in Cheylesmore aged between 60 and 90.  So again this is a possible area for a CAFE pilot group.  Sherril Donaldson who attended the meeting for the first time and said there may be a possibility of forming an African Caribbean group in the Hillfields area of Coventry.

For the rest of the meeting John Graham outlined the aims and approach of the project beyond this point subject to being able to raise sufficient charitable funds to support our ambitions.  Our overall aim is to reduce loneliness and social isolation among older people in Coventry.  Our target is to be in touch with 5,000 older people within three years and to facilitate this process by the use of touch screen computer technology.  We do not intend to launch a major digital inclusion programme, rather we aim to find and train some “proxy champions” of computer technology in each CAFE Group.  We have identified around 10 potential CAFE Groups so far who we would hope in the longer term to each be in touch with around 500 older people.

The first step in our project has already been completed by the publication on the GrumbleSmiles Blog of the survey results of the initial group.  Whilst not representative of all older people in Coventry, the group gave us some clear pointers where more information and greater contact might address some of the unfulfilled needs which lead to isolation and loneliness.  The second step during the autumn will be to gather together a Digital Champion Research Team who will be attached to the Age Resource Centre and operate from a base in the University.  Their initial research will be to trawl the internet and find Applications and Information, particularly on YouTube videos which can provide a menu for support to the CAFE Group Members.  It is hoped that the Digital Champion Research Team will be assisted by students from the University.   GrumbleSmiles Trust will launch a competition within the University to find innovative projects which enhance the menu of Touch Screen Computer Apps that we intend to introduce as part of our CAFE group facilitation process.  Some of these Apps are likely to already be available on the internet, others may be created with the support of older people in Coventry.  We want our approach to be innovative, unique and fun to add “pixie dust” to our proposals.

We hope to identify the CAFE Groups during the autumn and launch in early 2014 with a set up grant from the GrumbleSmiles Trust.  The grant will be designed to fund venues, new computers and survey / video technology where necessary.  Key people from each of the CAFE Groups will meet with the project team every month to share experience and monitor progress.

The GrumbleSmiles Project Team will comprise a part-time Research Director and Assistant Researcher from the University as well as a part-time Executive Director of the GrumbleSmiles project.  It is hoped that they can be funded from a charitable appeal which will be launched during the autumn, this will be managed by the University Fundraising Team.

THE NEXT MEETING WILL BE AT COVENTRY UNIVERSITY AT THE BEGINNING OF SEPTEMBER AND FINAL DETAILS WILL BE EMAILED TO PEOPLE NEARER THE TIME.    THEY HAVE WI-FI AND IT WOULD BE USEFUL IF YOU CAN BRING YOUR OWN LAPTOP OR TABLET.

Any progress that the participants can make in identifying useful applications during the summer, would give us a flying start to our autumn research.  Some examples of YouTube videos which are of interest are noted below.  You can find them by searching YouTube under the heading of “Happiness and Older People”:-

  • Laura Carstenson – “Older People are Happier” (11 minutes, 39 seconds)
  • Michael Norton – “How to buy Happiness” (10 minutes, 59 seconds)
  • A J Jacobs – “How Healthy living nearly killed me” (8 minutes, 43 seconds)
  • Jane Fonda – “Life’s Third Act” (11 minutes, 21 seconds)

ALL THE PARTICIPANTS IN THE PROJECT ARE INVITED TO POST THEIR COMMENTS AND IDEAS BELOW.  OTHER READERS ARE WELCOME TO ADD THEIR VIEWS.

CAFE HEALTH survey — LONELINESS

This is a continuation of the CAFE Health survey.  ( Other posts in this series can be found either by clicking on “CAFE Project” in the Tag Cloud or by clicking on  “GrumbleSmiles Trust” in the Topics list)

lonely

This is a critically important question to the GrumbleSmiles Trust.  Our central aim is to reduce loneliness and isolation amongst older people.  In the survey group it doesn’t seem to be a major problem, although even in this active group of people, 40% do feel lonely occasionally.
