Cloud Surfing – Mongolia

GrumbleSmiles was set up to provide innovative answers to tackling the problems of loneliness in later life.    Many older people are less able to get out and about, which can be the first steps towards a life of isolation.

My travels around the clouds continue (you can see more of my travel adventures by clicking on CLOUD SURFING in the TAG CLOUD).   Today I invite you to join me on a trip to unknown destinations around the world and an opportunity to talk to new and interesting people.    All at no cost and from the comfort of your own armchair.

We are going cloudsurfing to Mongolia.

Courtesy of blogger and photographer Cap Chastain.    Cap is an intrepid traveller and I have published several of his travel journeys before.  When you consider he is now 82 and still travelling, this is remarkable in itself, but his posts make great reading.

Mongolia is not a place I’ve ever been to, nor am I ever likely to go.  I always think of it as a country in the middle of nowhere made up of nothing but a desert landscape.  Not unlike the picture below.

Cap Chastain went there in 2015 and the link below will show you some of the photographs he took on that trip.  They more or less confirm my view of what it’s like.  Nonetheless Cap found much, much more.  So you should click on the link below.

This photograph is of Cap himself when visiting Mongolia and he looks remarkably like the images of Genghis Khan.  I can imagine he has now been adopted by the nation as a reincarnation of its founder 🙂

Once again my thanks to Cap for sharing his great photographs of his travels with us.

In the weeks ahead, I will publish more blogs and photographs from my cloud surfing travels.

  1. Ahem! Yeah! I am left in wonderment, at an oldie in their 80’s doing what they wished for? All I can say it is a life times experience!
The closeness of the Zerilic? languages of Mongolia and Russia was of interest, and historically, was Russia a part af The Ghengis Khan’s Mongolian empire long ago in history, and is that the root of the modern Russian Hungarian language?? I think it is time for me to eat my porridge?
It is in interesting times takes me back into the History of WWII and ‘Hitlers Invasion of Russian in 1941/42? and then most interestingly, was it the vastness of Russia and the ‘steppes’- the mongolian plains, as a nation that provided a natural boundary through which Russia could collect a nation of warriors, and a safer place to train, manufacture implements and armaments of war, such that in 1944 they could re-enter western Russia and Moscow with such clarity, that caused Hitler to retreat back to within their own germanic borders.
Is History Bunkum??? Does Cap have a message??? It lies in the people of whom he met and their integrity and honesty to lead a straight forward life. He has published/printed the pictures of a wilderness, and expressed in words the warmth and welcoming of the people, a simple message, for this old ‘buffer”

  2. Dear John, and CAP! all those pictures of plains in Mongolia, takes me back in history to the middle ages and those believers in ”A Flat Earth Society” and all the talk of falling over the edge??? Here we are today with some 11-13 candidates of the Conservative party, and the promise of a ‘New Prime Minister’ and leader of the Nation, I just wonder how quiet the Last Laugh Lonnie Party will remain behind the ‘wings’ as we all seek salvation from the ‘Devil In Carnate- who ever that will or may be’?
We do not need a Lonnie party, there are enough candidates in Westminster to fill my Christmas stocking?? All I may ask for is common sense, good judgement, and a compassionate soul, Not an A—-ole to boot up the jacksie, or vote into power???
Long Live The LLLP, cash and cheques to the normal address please- Any adverse comments on a postcard to the usual address!!

    • Just a thought on the LLLP and the twelve candidates for the leader of the conservative party, and to Be in the case of a Non General election in the UK The Prime Minister.
What is the LLLP thinking- here it is 12 apostles and the leader at the last supper? The Prime minister Teresa May has been metaphorically crucified, and so we or I ask ”is the Conservative Party going to be the new religion within the political classes of the UK”?
Please answers to the LLLP on a post card to the usual address
